About This Competition
The Balkan Mathematical Olympiad (BMO), founded in 1984, is a regional mathematics competition for Balkan nations. Greece is a founding member, and the competition is an important stepping stone for Greek students on the path to the IMO.
The senior BMO features 4 proof-based problems in 4.5 hours, while the Junior BMO (JBMO) serves students under 15.5 years. Regular participants include Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Serbia, North Macedonia, Cyprus, and others. The competition rotates among host countries annually.
How to Prepare
Train with Balkan and Regional Olympiad Problems
BMO problems bridge national olympiad and IMO difficulty. Practice with past BMO, MEMO, and other regional olympiad papers to calibrate your level.
Allocate Time Across Four Problems
With 4 problems in 4.5 hours, aim for about an hour per problem. If stuck after 45 minutes, switch problems and return with fresh perspective.
Use the BMO Problem Archive Online
Past BMO problems and solutions are available on AoPS and the official BMO website. Study solutions from multiple approaches to deepen understanding.
Represent Your Country at a Regional Level
BMO is a team event where each country sends a small delegation. The camaraderie and cultural exchange are as valuable as the mathematical experience.
