About This Competition

The First Mathematics Challenge (FMC) is a delightful mathematical activity for younger primary school pupils, organized by The Mathematical Association. Aimed at pupils aged 7-9 (Years 3 and 4 in England and Wales), it serves as a gentle and encouraging introduction to mathematical problem-solving.

Unlike more formal competitions, the FMC is designed first and foremost to portray mathematics as enjoyable and engaging. The challenge features age-appropriate problems that encourage curiosity about numbers, shapes, and patterns. All participants receive certificates recognizing their involvement.

Held in June each year, the FMC complements the Primary Mathematics Challenge (for older pupils aged 9-11) and together they provide a complete primary mathematics enrichment pathway. The challenge is open to schools worldwide, reflecting The Mathematical Association's mission to promote the joy of mathematics to learners of all ages.

How to Prepare

Study Tips

Build Number Sense Through Play

The First Mathematics Challenge is for younger students (grades 3-4). Focus on building number sense through games, visual puzzles, and hands-on activities.

Strategy

Draw Pictures to Help Solve Problems

Many problems at this level become clearer when you draw a picture or use objects to model the situation. Encourage visual problem-solving strategies.

Resources

Explore NRICH and the Mathematical Association

NRICH (nrich.maths.org) provides free, engaging mathematical activities. The Mathematical Association also offers past FMC papers and teacher resources.

Mindset

Celebrate Curiosity, Not Just Correct Answers

At this age, fostering mathematical curiosity is more important than competition results. Praise the process of thinking, not just getting the right answer.
