About This Competition
The Junior Mathematical Challenge (JMC) is the youngest tier of the UK Mathematics Trust's individual competitions, targeting students in Years 7-8 (ages 11-13). With over 270,000 participants, it is one of the largest school-level math competitions in Europe.
The 25 multiple-choice questions are designed to encourage mathematical reasoning and problem-solving. Approximately 40% of participants receive certificates (Gold, Silver, or Bronze), and top performers qualify for follow-on rounds including the Junior Kangaroo and Junior Mathematical Olympiad.
How to Prepare
Practice Number Puzzles and Logic
UKMT Junior Challenge emphasizes clever reasoning over formula knowledge. Practice with number puzzles, logic problems, and spatial reasoning questions.
Understand the Scoring System
First 15 questions: 5 marks correct, 0 wrong. Last 10 questions: 6 marks correct, minus 1 for wrong. Be more cautious with guessing on the last section.
Use UKMT Past Papers and Mentoring Scheme
Free past papers are available at ukmt.org.uk. If you score well, you may qualify for the UKMT Mentoring Scheme, which provides guided problem-solving training.
Gold, Silver, Bronze — Every Certificate Counts
Roughly top 40% receive certificates. Aim for Gold (top 6%) but celebrate any achievement. The goal is to develop mathematical thinking that lasts beyond the test.
