About This Competition
The Senior Mathematical Challenge (SMC) is the entry point to the UK's IMO selection pipeline, targeting students in Years 12-13 (ages 16-18). Over 100,000 students participate annually, making it one of the most substantial senior-level math competitions in Europe.
Top SMC performers qualify for the Senior Kangaroo or the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1 (BMO1). The best BMO1 performers advance to BMO2, and from there the UK IMO team is selected through additional training and testing.
How to Prepare
Strengthen A-Level and Beyond Topics
Senior Challenge tests material at the boundary of A-level maths. Ensure comfort with sequences, trigonometric identities, coordinate geometry, and proof.
Target the Last 10 Questions for Top Scores
Questions 16-25 carry the highest marks and the tightest penalty. If you're aiming for Gold, you need to solve several of these correctly.
Prepare with BMO1 Problems Too
If you're aiming for the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1 follow-on, start practicing proof-based BMO1 problems alongside SMC multiple-choice preparation.
A Stepping Stone to International Competitions
Top SMC performers can qualify for BMO1, BMO2, and ultimately the UK team for IMO. Even if that's not your goal, the analytical skills transfer to university-level maths.
